Who is Anne of Green Gables?!

The other day I was at the bank and complimented the teller on her pretty freckles. She, in turn, complimented me on mine and asked if I ever didn’t like them. I responded that I always loved them because of Anne of Green Gables and she said, “Who is that?”

WHO IS ANNE OF GREEN GABLES?!!!

Only one of the best written characters EVER!! If I could choose for any character to exist in real life, it would be her. I am convinced we would be best friends.

If you haven’t ever heard of Anne Shirley, do yourself a favor and go read the book or rent the movie (check your local library). You’ll love it because:

-she has a mirror friend

-the love story between her & Gilbert is one of the best love stories ever

-her spunky, red-headed, freckly attitude

-her outrageous imagination

and

-the outstanding and selfless parental love shown by Matthew and Marilla.

Now I’ll leave you with my favorite little bit of the book right after (SPOILER ALERT!!!) Gilbert proposes to Anne:

“But I’ll have to ask you to wait a long time, Anne,” said Gilbert sadly. “It will be three years before I’ll finish my medical course. And even then there will be no diamond sunbursts and marble halls.”

Anne laughed.

I don’t want sunbursts and marble halls. I just want YOU. You see I’m quite as shameless as Phil about it. Sunbursts and marble halls may be all very well, but there is more `scope for imagination’ without them. And as for the waiting, that doesn’t matter. We’ll just be happy, waiting and working for each other — and dreaming. Oh, dreams will be very sweet now.”

Gilbert drew her close to him and kissed her. Then they walked home together in the dusk, crowned king and queen in the bridal realm of love, along winding paths fringed with the sweetest flowers that ever bloomed, and over haunted meadows where winds of hope and memory blew.

  1. Abby asked me just last week what books I read when I was in school; thanks for reminding me of Anne of Green Gables. Not sure if it is her thing, but everyone should at least know who she is!

  2. Oh, I love it so much! Just the excerpt made me cry (I know, it caught me at just the right moment 😉 You remind me a lot of Anne as an adult and how she kept her childlike wonder and delight and shared it with her kiddos. Thanks for the reminder of one of my favorites – going to read them again starting tonight, and make sure Anna does too when she’s old enough.

    • That is possibly THE BEST compliment I have ever gotten. I adore Anne and strive to be like her, so to be compared to her is an amazing thing to hear. Thank you!!! Love you!

  3. Oh man! Add this to the list of things we have in common. I was sooo obsessed with this series and especially the movies growing up. Did you ever watch the Disney series Avonlea? (It was sort of a spin off and it was so great.) Thanks for your feature today. I still don’t think that outfit is worthy of your style blog, but I totally LOVE the compliment! I am laughing as I read through your posts. I have so many of the same things pinned and even the same pages of my Lucky magazines torn out to try to replicate some of the outfits that you did. So glad I met you! Hope to chat again soon.
