 Me: How would you describe your style?

Ashley: I have THE HARDEST time describing my style because some days it’s super bohemian and some days it’s more preppy, vintage, so i don’t know! It’s just whatever I’m feeling that day paired with whatever clothes I own and are clean! All i know is that it has to be pretty comfortable and simple because I live in arizona and layers just really are not my friend when it’s almost always 90 degrees or higher!

-How/why did you start your blog?

I actually started it when I was in a creative writing class at Arizona State University–so if you dig back into my archives you’ll find a lot of personal stories. I made it public when we were living in Idaho away from family and we had just gotten married so we had a lot of new stories to share with family and friends–gradually I started more people than just family and friends were reading…so that was kind of fun.

-What is the biggest challenge about having a style blog?

Trying to come up with something to write about so often. As I said, when I started the blog it was a creative writing outlet so I only wrote on it when I had a story to tell, but now that I want to keep it more updated, it can be a challenge to come up with anything interesting to talk about on a regular basis. Hopefully I don’t bore anyone too much! haha

-If you could have any clothing item right now, what would it be?

I’m on the hunt for the perfect ankle bootie for fall! if anyone has any suggestions, I’d love to hear. 🙂

-What are some of your favorite fashion tips/tricks you would pass on to a little sister or your future daughter?

I just want all woman to own their clothing choices. If there’s something you’ve always wanted to try, then do it! If you’re confident and comfortable with yourself, you’re going to look great!

-What’s your favorite place to shop?

I like a lot a places but a few that come to mind are asos.com, j.crew (with my employee discount), forever21, h&m, free people sale section, thrift stores and antique shops.

IMG_5068

-What article of clothing do you find you wear on repeat?

I’m almost always in a leather huarache or sandal and some skinny jeans–they’re just so comfortable and easy!

-What item is without fail, always in your purse?

Altoid Smalls in wintergreen, smith’s mint rose lip balm and pen and notebook. Most importantly the pen and notebook–I can’t stand being somewhere, getting an idea or needing to make a list and not having some place to write it down!

-What do you think are five key pieces every woman should own?

1. A great fitting pair of dark wash ankle skinnies like these.
2. An a-line high-waisted skirt like this.
3. A vintage floral silk scarf to wrap their hair up in like this (or pick one up at your local thrift store!)
4. A pretty pair of leather sandals like these.
5. A colorful or patterned heel that makes them feel fierce like these.

Style Blogger Interview: Knocked Up Fabulous

When I first stumbled upon April’s blog Knocked Up Fabulous, I first thought, “I LOVE this girl’s style!” As I read more, I realized she is not only a style blogger, but a working, thrift store loving mom like myself and I then thought, “If we lived in the same city, we could totally be friends.” I’m so excited to share April’s interview with you and am honored that she took the time to answer my questions. Hop on over to her blog or find her on Instagram for more pictures of her amazing outfits and gorgeous red hair.

Me: How would you describe your style?

April: I’ve always had a hard time labeling my style…but I’d say experimental with touches of glamour.

-How/why did you start your blog?

During my first pregnancy, I totally didn’t feel like myself!  It was like some crazy, out-of-body experience.  So when I got pregnant with number two, I knew I didn’t want to resort to my husband’s t-shirts and sweatpants again!  I started Knocked Up Fabulous as a motivational tool for me…and to help inspire other moms.  I has evolved lots since then!

-What advice would you give to other mothers about dressing up every day or being stylish?

I hear a lot from women, especially moms, say that they don’t have the time to “dress up” or “look good”.  But for me it’s all about planning ahead.  I pick and iron a week’s worth of outfits on Sundays.  I wash my hair in the evenings (then usually braid or twist it) to save time in the morning.  And most importantly, I am very familiar with my body type and only purchase clothes that flatter my figure.  So really, I think it’s just about being aware and thinking ahead!

-What is the biggest challenge about having a style blog?

Right now, it’s about finding the time!  Having a fashion blog is not just about putting outfits together and taking pictures.  There’s editing, promotion via social media, connecting with other bloggers, researching trends and events, emails with companies and such…it’s really a full-time gig!

-What are some of your favorite fashion tips/tricks you would pass on to a little sister or your future daughter?

Funny you should ask!  I wrote a post about lessons to teach my daughter.  You can see that here.

-What’s your biggest fashion mistake?

Wearing clothes that I saw on someone else.  She looked fabulous in it, but it ended up looking horrible on me.  Lesson learned?  Always be yourself!

-What’s your favorite place to shop?

I’m a happy camper at thrift stores and vintage jewelry shops!

025

-What article of clothing do you find you wear on repeat?

With fall quickly approaching, I know that I’ll be getting tons of use out of my green army jacket from Loft.  I can seriously wear that thing everyday and not get tired of it.

-Where do you get your outfit ideas from?

I kind of look to see what trends are up in the horizon and then I just “shop” my closet or fill in the blanks from thrifting.  Mostly though I just find a little time during the week to play “dress up” with my clothes and before I know it, I’ve put together 4 or 5 outfits.

011

-What is the best way to spend $50?

Oh, that’s easy…thrifting!  With fifty bucks, I can easily find 7 or so “new” pieces for my wardrobe.

-What item is without fail, always in your purse?

I always have some sort of lip color, cash (well, most days anyway), fruit leather for the kids, and a handful of bobby pins.

Happy Fashion Friday!

Style Blogger Interview: Coast to Coast Central

For the next six Fridays, I will be interviewing some fabulous bloggers that I follow and am inspired by. I hope you enjoy reading what inspires them and how they got started as much as I have loved having this glimpse into their everyday lives. I am so completely honored that each blogger took the time to answer my questions. Enjoy!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today I will be interviewing Lindsey and Lauren from Coast to Coast Central. You might recognize the name from some of the Coast to Coast challenges I’ve done on Instagram (you can find me over there at _thegirlwiththesmile). These two girls are lovely, young, spunky and have fabulous style! Their weekly challenges have helped me to stretch my style and use items in my wardrobe in new and different ways.
How/why did you start your blog?
We, Lindsey Clark & Lauren Palomares, started Coast to Coast Central in the summer of 2012. After moving from Tulsa, OK to opposite coasts, we were on the prowl for a tradition to keep us connected despite the distance. We decided to do little fashion “challenges” and upload them to Instagram. We began hashtagging them with #CoastToCoastChallenge. There was no agenda, just two friends trying to stay connected; however as the days passed, girls from around the country began inquiring what the #CoastToCoastChallenge hashtag was and asking how they could join. We invited our girlfriends to join us and before we knew it, the challenge caught on like wildfire. Girls around the globe were beginning to join us. After a couple weeks, we decided to create a blog as a home and central hub for our new Instagram fashion challenge. Our desire was that the blog would become a place of inspiration for women; a place where they could feel challenged, inspired and empowered. The rest, they say, is history…
If you could have any clothing item right now, what would it be?
Lindsey: We are always on the prowl for new things! So naturally, we have a Wishes + Wants post each week highlighting some of those items. Personally, it’s safe to say that my list of Wishes + Wants could go on for days! If I could have any of the items off my Wishes + Wants list right now, I’d pick:
1. Clogs! I’ve been eyeing them for a couple of months and cannot get enough of them!
2. A denim jumper! Jumpers are quickly becoming on of my new favorite items. They are quick and easy to style for on-the-go days!
3. Céline bag! Who doesn’t want a new designer bag to add to their collection?
What article of clothing do you wear on repeat?
Lindsey: When in doubt, I always opt for my LBD, aka “little black dress”. This go-to dress will never lead you astray. Seriously, you can do no wrong in it. My favorite thing about a LBD is that there are plenty of ways to style it, so that it looks like a fresh new outfit even if you are repeating it.
How has your style changed/evolved since you started your blog?
Lauren: I’ve always had an interest in style and fashion, but starting Coast to Coast Central has taken my interest in it to another level. More than ever I’m constantly looking out for the latest trends, keeping an eye on the fashion magazines, and scrolling through the hashtag feed to find other ladies whom I’m constantly inspired by. The women who participate in Coast to Coast Central are truly some of the most fashionable girls I’ve ever seen! The way they pair items together for different styles challenges me to do the same and encourages me to be bold and take risks!
What’s your biggest fashion mistake?
Lauren: It’s safe to say that I’ve had my fair share of mistakes. Besides wanting to live in my purple gymnastics leotard for a period of time, I’d have to say my biggest fashion mistake was my go-to hairstyle: helmet head. I had a brilliant idea one day to wet the top portion of my head, flip my hair upside down and pull it as close to my scalp as possible before tying it off with an elastic. On top of that I proceeded to douse it with hairspray to make sure I wouldn’t suffer from any fly-aways. My hair was so crispy and stuck to my head that after months of my dad referring to me as “helmet head”, I decided it might be time to switch things up!
Lindsey: Oh my! My biggest fashion mistake? Back in college, I wore thrift store shirts and peasant skirts like it was my job. I seriously think that was almost all I wore my freshman year. I may have worn pants once that year. Eventually my mother stepped in and forbade me from wearing my skirt and tee combo.
photo 1.PNG
What item is without fail in your purse?
Lindsey: Regardless of what day it is or what purse I’m carrying, you will always find:
1. Red Lipstick – It’s my signature color!
2. Dessert Gum – I seriously am beyond addicted to gum!
3. A Dream Book – It’s a little booklet I carry that stores all my random ideas and dreams! You never know when you’re going to think of something brilliant!
What’s your favorite place to shop?
Lauren: My favorite store has to be Anthropologie. Just walking into this store makes me feel über feminine and inspired to have a whimsical home. I love their classy but eclectic fashion style, and I always find myself swooning over their window displays!
What do you think are five key pieces every woman should own?
Lauren: Staple items are the key to reinventing it. Once you have some staple pieces in your closet, you can mix and match and people think you have an endless wardrobe! In my opinion, the five key pieces every woman should own are:
1. A black blazer
2. A quality chambray shirt
3. A nicely fitted LBD (little black dress)
4. A pair of perfectly hemmed dark skinny jeans
5. Nude heels
