I love fall. As much as I love the sunny days of summer, nothing compares to chilly windy days, boots, pumpkin spiced everything and sweaters. Unfortunately along with fall comes the time change. I seriously want to cry and put my head in the sand ostrich style to hide away from all the darkness. How can you wake up in the morning when it looks like the middle of the night outside?! And why do the days have to be so short?! I guess I’ll go console myself with a pumpkin spice latte.

Style Blogger Interview: For The Love Of

I’m interviewing Andrea today from the blog, For The Love Of. I have actually met Andrea in real life and can say she is just as gorgeous in person as she is in all her fabulous pictures. Andrea has a beautiful family and has been eating clean for the past couple of months. Hop on over to her blog to read more about that. Thanks again, Andrea for taking the time to answer my questions!

Me: How would you describe your style?

Andrea: California casual with a flair for feminine touches.  I love subtle pops of color and pattern, or really simple silhouettes that flatter the features I like the most.

-How/why did you start your blog?

Initially it began as a family blog when I was working full time and didn’t have the time to “scrapbook”, which was the big thing at the time.  Then it became as an outlet for my creativity and to keep my brain working, after I quit my job to stay home full time.

-What advice would you give to other mothers about dressing up every day or being stylish?

It takes just as much time and effort to put on a pair of jeans or a skirt, as it does to put on yoga pants.  Dressing shouldn’t be a chore, but something you look forward to everyday.  Women’s biggest complaint is that they don’t have anything to wear, or it takes too much time and brain power to put together an outfit.  But if you build up a closet of key pieces, with whatever your budget may be, it won’t feel so laborious and you’ll actually enjoy getting dressed again.

-What is the biggest challenge about having a style blog?

Finding the time to take outfit photos. I’ve been documenting my outfits for over 3 years now, so I’ve grown picky about where and how I take my photos.  Because of this, timing, lighting, and location don’t often work to my advantage with a husband who works a lot and the schedules of 3 kids.  I’d love to publish more style posts, because I have plenty to share, I just can’t seem to get the timing right.

-How has your style changed/evolved since you started your blog?

The blog hasn’t changed my style, rather my age, and growing confidence in my taste level, has.  I used to be a lot more influenced by others style.  Now, I may get inspired by others, but I know what I like and I feel good about what I choose to wear the majority of the time.

-If you could have any clothing item right now, what would it be?

A great black leather motorcycle jacket for Fall.

IMG_0573

-Who has been your fashion inspiration?

Not that it translates into my personal style at all, because her lifestyle is so vastly different than mine, but I love Taylor Tomasi Hill’s style.  From her hair to her shoes, she’s got killer style.

-What are some of your favorite fashion tips/tricks you would pass on to a little sister or your future daughter?

Less is more.  Don’t overdo it.  Don’t wear clothes that are too tight or too short.  Wear what you love and don’t fall prey to trends.  I think most women, from the time we’re little girls playing dress-up, have an innate sense of what we love, style wise.  We either listen to it and follow it, or ignore it and let it go quiet, or push it aside and wear what we think we should wear.  Listen to that little voice.

-What’s your biggest fashion mistake?

Buying white fur snow boots.

IMG_5586

-What’s your favorite place to shop?

Nordstrom, Madewell, Zara

-What article of clothing do you find you wear on repeat?

Chambray shirt, a couple of great dresses I love.

-Where do you get your outfit ideas from?

Various style blogs, magazines, Pinterest.

IMG_3933

-What is the best way to spend $50?

A dress you find on sale, or some new makeup.

-What item is without fail, always in your purse?

Hand lotion – I hate having dry hands.

-What do you think are five key pieces every woman should own?

White button up blouse, a trench coat, great pair of denim, a versatile dress and nude pumps.

Happy Fashion Friday!

What I Was Doing When I Wasn’t Doing What I Was Supposed To Be Doing

In college, my room was never cleaner than during midterms and finals. I am not a fan of cleaning, but when it was time to buckle down and study (something I’m also not a fan of), I all of sudden couldn’t look past my clothes that weren’t put away or my messy bathroom counter. How could I sit and focus when these messes were practically screaming at me to be picked up?! And so came the term my cousin coined so perfectly:

I am a productive procrastinator.

Just give me a deadline and that other thing that I’ve been waiting forever to do and dreading, will magically get finished. Does anyone else do this? Nope? Just me? Figures.

Like I’ve said before, Liam’s teacher is amazing. I’m so thankful that she sends me updates and daily ongoings that happen in their class. Here is one of their latest conversations she emailed me about:

Teacher:  Liam, didn’t you just wash your hands?  Why are you doing it again?

Liam:  Because Mrs. J busted me picking my nose when I thought no one would see me.  She was standing right behind me!

Teacher:  Yeah, we teachers have eyes on everyone all the time…parents do this as well.

Liam:  I know…tell me about it, my mom and dad catch me all the time!

Teacher:  Well, you could think about not picking your nose and using a tissue..

Liam:  That would make way too much sense…

Teacher:  Yup… (and we both laughed)

Oy. That child of mine. He’s hilarious.

Here’s a fun game to play in the car. Perfect for road trips or just to make your usual everyday drive more exciting.

Your name is your “call in button”. Put your radio on scan (Note: This works better in more urban cities that have a lot of stations, although where I live every other station is in Spanish, so sometimes that plan backfires). In the three seconds or so that it is playing a song, try to be the first to “call in” and name the singer. After you buzz in, you have about a second and a half before the other players are allowed to buzz in and you lose your turn.

Example:

(turns radio to scan)

Me: “Rena! Maroon 5!”

And I get a point.

We play it so that if you call a wrong band, then you get a minus point (although we don’t really keep track of points, just the glorious pride of getting it right before your spouse is usually enough of a prize).

Enjoy!

Here are five things I know to be true:

1. If there is ice cream in my house, I will consume it.

2. The forward facing feature on the iPhone camera is totally cheating when it comes to taking selfies.

3. My husband, who proclaimed to hate brussel sprouts when we first got married six years ago, just bought some when he went to the store by himself. I consider my job as a wife a success.

4. Finding a hair stuck under your shirt the first time you try to find it is like winning the lottery.

5. I know all the names to the boys in One Direction and as much as I say it’s because I work with middle schoolers, it’s because I secretly like them. There will always be a special place in my heart for boy bands (although N*SYNC will always be the best…no question).

Style Blogger Interview: Tales For Karina Marie

Posted on

Today I’m interviewing Emily from the blog Tales For Karina Marie. I love Emily’s eclectic style and her carefree way of looking at life. Plus she works for Sperry, so she always has tons of fun giveaways. Hop on over and check out her blog!

Me: How would you describe your style?

Emily: Colorful. I LOVE color and everything about bright colors being incorporated into outfits to add more flare! I’d say If I could give my style a title, I guess it would be urban Mod. I can be really feminine at times and then I’ll rock the flannel masculine look. I love dressing casual with masculine touches.

-How/why did you start your blog?

My best friend of over 10 years died in a car accident in September of 2011. I decided to start a blog to dedicate to her, and use my love for fashion and styling as the foundation.

-What is the biggest challenge about having a style blog?

Keeping up with outfit posts! Sometimes I’ll feel so uninspired. ESPECIALLY in the middle of the summer when I’m all sticky and sweaty and just NOT feelin’ it.

image 2

-How has your style changed/evolved since you started your blog?

My style is COMPLETELY different from when I started my blog. I’ve always been known as the “eclectic friend” who’s kinda crazy and dresses a little bizarre, but it’s definitely gotten more preppy-friendly since I work for one of the preppiest brands in fashion footwear.
-If you could have any clothing item right now, what would it be?
This mustard dress with blue bows from Ruche that I’ve been eyein’.

-Who has been your fashion inspiration?

Audrey Hepburn, Marcus Mumford, Zooey Deschanel

image 4

-What are some of your favorite fashion tips/tricks you would pass on to a little sister or your future daughter?

Quantity does not mean quality. Buying a fafillion things at Forever21 or H&M is not wise in opinion. Those pieces will last 1-4 wears in my opinion and then you have to throw them away. You also can’t resell those pieces as easily.

-What’s your biggest fashion mistake?

I got into a thrifting frenzy a couple years ago, and I started purchasing pieces just because I could, and then I never wore them because they were pieces of junk. SO I rarely thrift now. I save thrifting for vintage pieces only.

-What’s your favorite place to shop?

Modcloth & Anthropologie (they’re a tie)

image 3

-What article of clothing do you find you wear on repeat?

Jeans. I love jeans.

-Where do you get your outfit ideas from?

Myself. Pinterest. Current trends.

-What is the best way to spend $50?

Groceries. I know that’s not fashion-related, but I find myself budgeting out fashion before food. That’s never good. Ha!

-Who is your celebrity style inspiration?

Carey Mulligan, Emma Stone

-What item is without fail, always in your purse?

My patchouli homemade scent, my wallet, chapstick

-What do you think are five key pieces every woman should own?

A little black dress, a white tee, a nice pair of straight-legged stretchy jeans, a pair of nude flats, and a poncho

 Happy Fashion Friday!
