If You Like It Then You Shoulda Put A Bow On It

Posted on

(I must be in a Beyonce mood this week, since this is the second week I’ve brought up one of her songs. But they’re so darn catchy!)

I know bows are sometimes considered juvenile or too young for an adult to wear, but I strongly disagree.

Here is my argument FOR the bow and four ways it could be worn:

1. With a bun for a pop of color.

2. Hold hair back slightly on side (this would work great with a set of swoopy bangs).

3. At the end of a braid.

4. At the top of a collar (instant bow tie!)

So…did I sell you? Are you going to start wearing bows?

What My Mom Taught Me About Fashion

This post is majoring lacking in pictures and I apologize. Apparently tracking down pictures of my mom is quite difficult. But I promise you, she has quite the fashion sense. It’s genetic, duh.

Since it’s Mother’s Day on Sunday, I wanted to point out a few tips my mom taught me:

-Work your curves. Always accentuate what you got with some well-placed darts and a flared out skirt. (And I’ve inherited quite the curves from her side of the family that I’m quite proud of.)

-Accessorize. My mom is the best at wearing fabulous jewelry, especially pearls.

-Rock bangs, no matter how short they are. If you see in the top right picture, my mom had some shorty bangs. This may have been because my grandma didn’t know when to quit cutting and not because it was the trend at the time…

-Don’t buy anything full price. We ladies love a good sale/clearance rack.

AND

-Wear colors that flatter you. My mom is really good at wearing colors that work well with her skin tone and taught me to avoid colors that make your skin look like you are suffering from food poisoning (for me it’s chartreuse…bleh).

I’m so thankful for her and for the things that I’ve learned from her throughout my life. She is a fabulous mom/grandma and I continue to look up to her, even though she is six inches shorter than me. ;)

Don’t Judge A Book By It’s Cover

I love thrifting. No, more than love…I’m a little obsessed. I could go every day and never get tired of it. I don’t buy something every time I go, but it is über therapeutic to skim over clothes and look at so many different styles/eras of fashion in one place.

The best is when you find something “ugly” and give it new life.

I found this dress that I felt like had good bones, although I think my sister threw up in her mouth when she had to look at it while taking my picture. She really didn’t like it.

I had originally planned on shortening the sleeves and the hem of the skirt and modernizing the look.

Then I woke up and remembered that I have 2% skills in the DIY/sewing category and decided to just turn it into a midi skirt. Fortunately the waist line is elasticized, so all I had to do was cut above it to make a skirt.

It is pretty sheer, so I have to wear it with a slip. The top also has a frayed finish to it, so I can’t tuck in a shirt. I someday hope to nice-ify it, but remember my DIY-lacking skills.

Despite that, I turned this dated, slightly funky dress into a trendy midi-skirt.

So, when you’re thrifting, make sure to #1-call me first so I can join you and #2-don’t quickly pass on something that might be “ugly”.
